Here at the Sanathane Fine Arts Academy, our portfolio group has been working on a variety of different projects, and in order to learn the use of acrylic paint, our students have worked on a few reproductions of the work of the Russian-American Abstract Expressionist, Mark Rothko. The work displayed in the gallery showcases various sides of Rothko’s work; his late 1940s work, which saw his transition from symbolism to nondescript abstract shapes and expressive color use, his 50s work which saw the arrival of his classic style of rectangular shapes, contrasting colors and color transposition, and his 60s work, an exploration of darkness in color and in theme inspired by his readings of 19th century German philosopher, Friedrich Nietsche. Through these different eras, our students have grasped color transposition and abstraction. The work of Rothko has been a great inspiration to our students, his expressive manipulation of geometric forms and striking colors has left its signature on all of our works.
